A tropical depression, currently situated just beyond the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), is on the brink of entering the country and could be designated as the 18th tropical storm of the year, according to the latest update from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The depression, which was last pinpointed 620 kilometers south of Kalayaan, Palawan, is characterized by maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts reaching up to 70 kph, moving in a north-northeast direction at 20 kph. Its trough is already influencing weather patterns in the Philippines, causing cloudy conditions with scattered rains and thunderstorms across Zamboanga Peninsula, and the provinces of Palawan, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. Other parts of Mindanao are expected to see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. PAGASA anticipates that the depression will enter PAR within the next 24 hours and will be named ‘Rumina’. Additionally, the shear line and the northeast monsoon, known locally as amihan, are set to bring rainfall to various regions. The Visayas, Bicol Region, Calabarzon, and the provinces of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Dinagat Islands will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms due to the shear line. Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and Central Luzon will be under cloudy skies with monsoon rains. PAGASA has issued a warning for the public to remain alert for possible flash floods or landslides, particularly during heavy downpours. The rest of Luzon is expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the amihan, with no significant impacts anticipated.
