The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has expressed appreciation for the public’s positive feedback on the Marcos administration’s disaster response, as revealed by a recent Pulse Asia survey. The survey, conducted between November 26 and December 3, showed that 57% of Filipinos approve of the government’s efforts in aiding calamity-stricken regions. Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the Disaster Response Management Group credited this approval to the effective collaboration between local government units (LGUs) and national government agencies (NGAs) during emergencies. Dumlao emphasized that the DSWD views this public approval as motivation to enhance their services further. As a key player in the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the DSWD leads multiple clusters including Disaster Response and Early Recovery, Camp Coordination and Camp Management, and Food and Non-Food Items. Dumlao highlighted the DSWD’s role in setting high standards for humanitarian responses. She also mentioned the success of the Buong Bansa Handa initiative, which has improved the DSWD’s ability to respond to disasters, notably during the series of tropical cyclones that hit the country. The DSWD’s efforts have been supported by a comprehensive ‘whole-of-nation’ approach involving both government and private sectors. Looking forward, the DSWD plans to deepen its partnerships with LGUs and other agencies, and aims to expand its network of repacking centers and storage facilities, with nearly 1,000 currently operational and plans for further development, especially in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas.
