Decrease in Offshore Earthquakes Noted in Ilocos Sur, Vigilance Urged

·

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced a reduction in offshore seismic activity in Ilocos Sur during a recent briefing. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol highlighted that the number of earthquakes has significantly dropped, with only one quake recorded in the last 24 hours, a stark contrast to the peak of 70 quakes on December 19. Despite this decline, Bacolcol emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and prepared for potential seismic events across the Philippines, not just in Ilocos Sur. He pointed out that movements along the Manila Trench could trigger not only powerful earthquakes but also devastating tsunamis, potentially reaching up to 10 meters in height. Bacolcol advised the public to be alert for signs of an impending tsunami, such as intense shaking, a sudden drop in sea level, or a roaring sound from the sea, and to evacuate to higher ground if any of these signs are observed. In response to these developments, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) has scheduled an urgent meeting to enhance tsunami preparedness. OCD Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno stressed the need for clear communication of tsunami risks and advocated for immediate evacuation to higher ground rather than to designated centers, which may not be safe during a tsunami. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also called on local government units to remain vigilant and to implement comprehensive disaster preparedness measures, including the establishment of evacuation routes and the training of response teams.
