Senator Risa Hontiveros voiced serious concerns on Monday regarding reports that certain officials within the Bureau of Immigration might be attempting to secure bail for Tony Yang. Yang, the elder brother of Michael Yang, who served as an economic advisor to former President Rodrigo Duterte, was recently hospitalized due to a lung condition, as confirmed by his lawyer, Raymond Fortun. Hontiveros questioned the potential release of Yang, citing substantial evidence of his exploitation of Philippine policies. She referenced the case of Alice Guo, the dismissed mayor of Bamban, who managed to evade authorities, questioning whether Tony Yang would respect the law if released. Hontiveros stressed that Yang, accused of posing as a Filipino to profit alongside his brother, has exploited the Filipino populace. She insisted that Yang should remain detained, suggesting that any necessary medical treatment could be provided while he remains in custody. Additionally, Hontiveros highlighted that Yang is wanted in China and urged the Anti-Money Laundering Council to hasten its investigation into Yang’s alleged money laundering. Yang is currently held by the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission and faces charges including falsifying documents, perjury, and violations of the Anti-Alias Law. He has also been connected to an illegal online gaming operation allegedly owned by Guo.
