Feast of Jesus Nazareno Kicks Off with ‘Pahalik’ on January 7

·

The Feast of Jesus Nazareno, a significant event in the Catholic calendar, is set to commence with the traditional ‘pahalik’ ceremony on January 7 at Quirino Grandstand in Manila’s Rizal Park. This ritual, where devotees kiss or touch the revered image of Jesus Nazareno, marks the beginning of a series of celebrations leading up to the feast day on January 9, 2025.

Following the ‘pahalik’, the festivities will include 30 Fiesta Masses starting from January 8 at 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. on January 9. The ‘Misa Mayor’, a key event, will be presided over by Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula at midnight on the feast day.

The celebrations began on December 31 with a Novena Mass, and continued with the blessing of replica images and banners by Quiapo priests on January 2. The highlight of the feast is the Traslacion, a grand procession that sees millions of devotees accompanying the image of Jesus Nazareno from Quirino Grandstand to the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo. Last year, the Traslacion attracted 6.5 million attendees.

The feast has been recognized as a national liturgical event since 2024, expanding its celebration across the country. In recognition of its significance, Malacañang has declared January 9 a special non-working day in Manila.

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna emphasized the importance of cooperation and compassion among attendees, stating, “Let us help each other out – be patient and compassionate towards others – for a more meaningful and peaceful celebration.”
