The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced comprehensive security arrangements for the upcoming Feast of Quiapo and Jesus Nazareno, set to take place on January 9. The event, which attracts millions of devotees, will see the deployment of 14,000 police officers, including those in plainclothes, to ensure safety during the festivities.
Starting from Tuesday, officers will be stationed at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, where the traditional ‘pahalik’ or kissing of the Nazareno image will occur. According to PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo, the force includes 12,168 officers dedicated to securing the area and procession route, with an additional 2,306 officers as a support force.
Control points will be established along the procession route, which begins at the Quirino Grandstand. Security personnel will be positioned at the front and rear of the procession, with mobile units on motorcycles and officers on foot patrolling the sides. Plainclothes officers will mingle with the crowd during the Traslacion, the procession that typically lasts over 20 hours, to monitor and report any suspicious activities.
While no significant threats have been identified, the PNP has contingency plans ready to manage any disruptions. The use of signal jamming will be determined based on the day’s security assessment. The police force will also include medical and quick-response teams to assist any devotees injured during the event, and the Highway Patrol Group will oversee traffic management and rerouting.
In anticipation of rain, attendees are permitted to carry transparent bags and raincoats. However, Fajardo advised against bringing valuables or large sums of cash to reduce the risk of theft. She also emphasized the importance of adhering to security protocols and avoiding prohibited items like bladed objects and backpacks to streamline security checks.
The PNP anticipates around 6.5 million participants for this year’s Black Nazarene feast, which will commence with a midnight Fiesta Mass on January 9, followed by the Traslacion.
