New Flood Control Measures Enhance Livelihood in Marinduque

·

Residents of Barangay Bamban in Boac, Marinduque, are experiencing a significant uplift in their daily lives thanks to a newly completed flood control structure. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) finished the project in late 2024, aiming to mitigate the severe effects of frequent flooding in the area. According to a report to Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 4-B Director Gerald Pacanan highlighted that the structure is set to boost local livelihood activities, particularly farming, which is the main income source for the community. Pacanan emphasized that the project not only enhances disaster resilience but also ensures the safety and security of residents against the long-standing issue of flooding that has caused substantial damage to properties, livestock, and crops. The DPWH Marinduque District Engineering Office executed the project, which includes a 385-lineal meter revetment wall reinforced with steel sheet piles, designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. The initiative, costing PHP67.54 million, was funded through the 2024 General Appropriations Act.
