DSWD Confirms Safety of Meals at Walang Gutom Kitchen

·

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has reassured the public that the food provided at the Walang Gutom Kitchen in Pasay City is safe for those facing involuntary hunger. This assurance came during a media event at the DSWD’s central office in Quezon City, where Jason Oabel, the officer-in-charge of the Social Technology Bureau, emphasized the kitchen’s strict adherence to a ‘first in, first out’ policy. This system ensures that donated food from private sector partners is used before it expires, safeguarding the health of the kitchen’s beneficiaries.

Oabel highlighted the importance of checking expiration dates, stating, ‘We prioritize the expiration dates because it’s crucial. We rigorously apply the first in, first out method to guarantee that the food we distribute does not harm those who rely on the Walang Gutom Kitchen services.’ Additionally, the kitchen takes care to gather and document allergen information to prevent any adverse reactions among diners.

The DSWD welcomes food donations, provided they are clean, safe, and not ‘pagpag’—a term for discarded food. Oabel clarified that the donations received are surplus items, not leftovers, and are often in the form of packed meals from establishments like the New World Hotel, a member of the Philippine Hotel Owners Association (PHOA). The kitchen also accepts a variety of food items, including vegetables, canned goods, and other raw ingredients suitable for cooking.

Oabel also extended an ongoing invitation for more donations and volunteer services from hotels, restaurants, and individuals eager to support the Walang Gutom Kitchen’s mission. He stressed the importance of community involvement in helping more people on the streets. Those interested in volunteering or donating can contact the kitchen at 0916-829-7202 or via email at [email protected].
