MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to make a crucial decision regarding the potential extension of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil’s term before his mandatory retirement on February 7, according to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla. This announcement came after a meeting at Malacañan Palace where Marcos expressed a favorable stance towards extending Marbil’s tenure. However, Remulla clarified that no final decision has been made yet. Marcos is expected to reveal his decision before Marbil’s birthday on February 7. The President has indicated that extending Marbil’s term could help maintain stability within the PNP during the upcoming election period. Remulla supported this move, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the status quo until after the elections, with a possible extension of up to six months. Marbil, who was appointed PNP chief on April 1, 2024, and is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991, will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 on February 7, 2025. Remulla also mentioned that a list of potential successors for Marbil is already in place, with the final choice resting with the President.
