LTFRB Examines Proposed P15 Increase in Jeepney Fares

·

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is currently evaluating a proposal to raise the minimum fare for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) by PHP15. This initiative comes in response to a petition from various transport organizations, driven by escalating fuel prices and other operational costs. The LTFRB has emphasized that it is conducting a comprehensive review, taking into account factors such as fuel price fluctuations, inflation, and the potential impact on passengers. The board is committed to supporting the sustainability of transport operators’ livelihoods while also considering the economic pressures faced by commuters. Following the review, the LTFRB plans to hold public hearings and consultations to ensure a transparent and inclusive decision-making process. The agency reassures that it aims to find a balanced solution that is fair to both transport operators and the commuting public. The existing minimum fare stands at PHP13 for traditional PUJs and PHP15 for modern PUJs, set since October 8, 2023. Transport groups have been advocating for a fare increase due to the rising costs of fuel, food, and general inflation.
