The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has recently inaugurated two new public utility vehicle (PUV) stops at Bonifacio Shrine in Manila, aiming to enhance accessibility and safety for commuters. The unveiling took place on January 22, 2025, and was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure, Jesus Ferdinand Ortega.
Ortega highlighted the significance of the new stops, describing them as a step towards modern, inclusive, and sustainable solutions in the transportation sector. He emphasized that the project aligns with the broader objectives of the DOTr to improve, secure, and make public transportation more accessible to all Filipinos.
The newly introduced PUV stops boast several advanced features, including CCTV surveillance, well-lit environments, concrete bollards for safety, and designated seating areas for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and senior citizens. Additionally, the stops are designed to support cycling as a form of active transportation, equipped with bike racks, a bike shed, and a repair station.
Ortega expressed that these facilities are intended to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative mode of transport, which not only helps reduce pollution but also contributes to public health. Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna also expressed her gratitude towards the DOTr for their efforts in supporting the residents of Manila through this initiative.
Mayor Lacuna hopes that this collaboration between national and local governments will lead to more beneficial projects for the public in the future.
