A significant earthquake of magnitude 5.8 shook Southern Leyte on Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The seismic event occurred at 7:39 a.m., centered 10.01 kilometers southeast of San Francisco, at a depth of 14 kilometers. The quake was strongly felt in San Francisco with an intensity of VI, while neighboring areas like Anahawan, Hinunangan, and others experienced intensity V. Further afield, places such as Abuyog, Bato, and the City of Baybay in Leyte felt intensity IV. The tremor reached as far as Cebu City and parts of Surigao del Norte with intensity III, and even Cagayan de Oro reported intensity II. Instrumental measurements confirmed these intensities, with additional readings in various locations across the region. Phivolcs warned of potential aftershocks and possible damage following the earthquake.
