Philippine Navy Boosts Anti-Submarine Warfare with Advanced Fleet

·

The Philippine Navy has significantly enhanced its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, according to a recent statement from a naval spokesperson. Captain John Percie Alcos revealed that nearly all ships in the Philippine Fleet’s Offshore Combat Force are now equipped to handle ASW operations. This development comes as the Navy plans to deploy surface action groups to bolster maritime patrols across Philippine waters.

ASW involves the detection, tracking, and potential neutralization of enemy submarines within national waters. Key assets in the Philippine Navy’s arsenal include the modern guided-missile frigates BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151). These ships are outfitted with advanced sonar systems and weaponry designed to counter submarine threats. Additionally, the frigates are supported by AW-159 ‘Wildcat’ ASW helicopters, which carry dipping sonars and anti-submarine torpedoes, further enhancing the fleet’s ASW capabilities.

Another vessel contributing to the Navy’s ASW strength is the BRP Conrado Yap (PS-30), a former Pohang-class corvette donated by South Korea in 2019. Moreover, the three Gregorio Del Pilar-class offshore patrol vessels have been upgraded with sonar systems, enabling them to detect submarines when necessary.

The Philippine Navy anticipates further strengthening its ASW capabilities with the upcoming delivery of two guided missile corvettes and six offshore patrol vessels currently under construction in South Korea, expected within the next two years.
