Chinese National Arrested for Espionage Studied at Military-Run University

MANILA – A Chinese national, recently arrested on espionage charges, was revealed to have attended a university operated by the Chinese military, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI). BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado disclosed that the individual, an IT specialist, was involved in collecting data on critical Philippine infrastructures. The suspect has been in the Philippines since 2013, frequently traveling in and out of the country. He is married to a Filipina and has a child. Viado mentioned that deportation proceedings will be initiated against the suspect, in addition to other legal actions to be pursued in local courts. The arrest, which occurred on January 17, involved the suspect and two Filipino accomplices at a Makati City condominium, targeting key military and civilian infrastructures. In related news, the BI is enhancing its operations with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to modernize border control and improve intelligence gathering, following directives from the President.
