In a significant law enforcement operation in Laguna, a Japanese man believed to be part of the infamous ‘Luffy’ gang was apprehended. The arrest took place in Savana Village, San Pablo City, where 43-year-old Sasaki Takashi was taken into custody by agents from the Bureau of Immigration (BI), working alongside the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group and local police forces. The operation was announced by the BI on Tuesday.
Takashi, who is wanted by Japanese authorities for theft and fraud, has been targeting vulnerable individuals. Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado emphasized the threat Takashi’s presence poses to Philippine communities and the nation’s efforts to uphold security and order. The Tokyo Summary Court had issued an arrest warrant for Takashi in January 2023, charging him with violations of Japan’s Penal Code.
According to reports from Japanese authorities, Takashi and his associates engaged in scams where they stole ATM cards and bank details from elderly victims by impersonating law enforcement or financial officials. Commissioner Viado highlighted the arrest as a testament to the crucial role of international cooperation in combating transnational crimes, pledging to enhance partnerships with both local and international agencies to prevent the Philippines from becoming a refuge for fugitives.
Further investigations have linked Takashi to a notorious Japanese criminal syndicate known for telecom fraud and extortion activities within the Philippines. Following his arrest, Takashi will be held at the BI warden facility in Taguig City pending his deportation.
