Japanese ‘Luffy’ Gang Member Captured in Laguna Operation

·

In a significant law enforcement operation, a Japanese man believed to be part of the infamous ‘Luffy’ gang was apprehended in Laguna province. The arrest took place in Savana Village, San Pablo City, where 43-year-old Sasaki Takashi was taken into custody by agents from the Bureau of Immigration (BI), working alongside the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group and local law enforcement.

Takashi, who faces charges of theft and fraud in Japan, was described by Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado as a threat to Philippine communities. He is accused of targeting vulnerable individuals, stealing their ATM cards and bank details by impersonating officials from law enforcement or financial sectors.

The arrest warrant for Takashi was issued by the Tokyo Summary Court in January 2023, following his involvement in crimes that exploit the elderly. Commissioner Viado emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational crime, stating that such efforts are crucial to prevent the Philippines from becoming a refuge for international fugitives.

Further investigations have linked Takashi to a notorious Japanese criminal syndicate known for telecom fraud and extortion activities within the Philippines. Following his arrest, Takashi will be held at the BI warden facility in Taguig City pending his deportation.
