Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has emphasized the need for robust protections for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) negotiates with foreign nations to secure more job opportunities. Gatchalian stressed that the DMW must vigilantly oversee the welfare, safety, and rights of OFWs to shield them from exploitation, neglect, and unjust labor practices. He made these remarks following the arrival of OFWs and their families at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Paranaque City on December 18, 2023. While recognizing the benefits of overseas employment, Gatchalian also highlighted the importance of fostering economic growth within the Philippines to lessen the country’s dependence on foreign jobs. He advocated for the creation of substantial employment opportunities domestically to prevent Filipinos from feeling compelled to work abroad. The DMW is actively engaging with various countries to open up new, safe, and legal job avenues for OFWs. Yet, ongoing issues of abusive conditions in certain host countries have prompted lawmakers, including Gatchalian, to push for more stringent protections and increased government supervision.
