Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino has urged the creation of a specialized West Philippine Sea Command, aiming to fortify maritime security and national defense. During his speech at the Kapihan sa Senado forum, Tolentino announced his intention to send a formal letter to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., detailing the strategic and operational advantages of establishing this new command. He argued that such a command would enhance the Philippines’ ability to respond effectively to security threats by providing dedicated leadership, resources, and operational capabilities. Tolentino stressed that the new command should operate independently from the existing Western Command (WESCOM) and Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) to improve coordination and response times. He highlighted the need for this command to oversee areas like Palawan, Panatag (Scarborough Shoal), Ayungin Shoal, and Bajo de Masinloc, which are currently split between WESCOM and NOLCOM. The senator also suggested that the command should be headed by a Philippine Navy admiral to ensure a cohesive strategy in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. This proposal aligns with the implementation of the Philippine Maritime Zones Law, aiming to enhance coordination among the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard, and the National Police Maritime Group.
