In a collaborative effort to enhance the well-being of female inmates, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Irish Embassy in the Philippines organized a dance workshop at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City. The event, held on February 12, 2025, was attended by key figures including Irish Ambassador Emma Hickey and Naomi McElroy, Head of Consular at the Embassy of Ireland in the Philippines. The workshop aimed to promote health and wellness through Irish dance, while also introducing the inmates to Irish culture, thereby fostering stronger ties between the Philippines and Ireland. This initiative aligns with the Marcos administration’s focus on improving human rights and facilitating the reintegration of inmates into society. Justice Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez highlighted the workshop as a testament to the commitment to rehabilitation and second chances. Ambassador Hickey expressed her delight in participating and praised the ongoing programs at the institution. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla acknowledged the event as a noble gesture towards the ‘reforming sisters behind bars’ and expressed hopes for future collaborations with Ireland. The workshop received support from SPARK Philippines Inc., a non-profit dedicated to advancing women and youth in gender equality efforts.
