In a stern response to a recent incident involving a warrantless search, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil has mandated all police units to adhere rigorously to operational protocols and ethical standards. The directive follows an investigation into an event where officers intruded into a residence in Taguig City without a legal warrant on February 9. Marbil emphasized the PNP’s dedication to maintaining the highest levels of discipline and professionalism, stating that any deviation from these standards would face severe repercussions, including potential dismissal, demotion, or suspension, alongside criminal charges. He stressed the importance of upholding the law and safeguarding citizens’ rights, aiming to restore public trust in the police force. The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, showed officers in civilian attire entering a woman’s home, who had previously been acquitted of drug charges. The video also alleged that the officers assaulted her teenage son and seized his phone. Reports suggest these officers frequently conduct unwarranted raids in the area known as ‘Block 5’. In response, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has suspended the implicated officers and their supervisor to ensure an unbiased investigation. Their firearms have been surrendered as per protocol. NCRPO chief Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin confirmed that multiple charges, including robbery, grave coercion, physical injury, obstruction of justice, and violations of child protection laws, have been lodged against the ten involved officers at the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office. The Department of Justice will review these complaints to assess the presence of sufficient evidence for convictions.
