Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on taxpayers to take advantage of the extended estate tax amnesty program, emphasizing its benefits for both the public and the government. The program, which has been extended under Republic Act 11956, allows heirs, transferees, and beneficiaries to settle estate taxes without incurring penalties or interest until June 14, 2025. This extension, which Gatchalian helped author and sponsor, now covers estates of individuals who died on or before May 31, 2022, a significant expansion from the previous deadline of December 31, 2017.
Gatchalian pointed out that this extension provides families with additional time to comply with tax obligations and secure legal ownership of inherited properties. He suggested that the timing is ideal for settling these obligations, as many are already planning their finances for the first half of the year. This call to action coincides with Tax Awareness Month in February.
The process for filing under the amnesty can be completed either manually or electronically at authorized banks or Revenue District Offices. To encourage broader participation, installment payment options are available.
Beyond promoting the amnesty program, Gatchalian stressed the importance of tax education. He urged Filipinos to take an active role in understanding their tax responsibilities, which he believes will lead to increased tax compliance and generate essential revenue for government programs and infrastructure.
