Philippine National Police Reports Significant Drop in Crime Rates

·

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced a substantial reduction in the national crime rate, with a 26.76% decrease observed over the first six weeks of the year. PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil shared that from January 1 to February 14, the number of focus crimes dropped to 3,528 from 4,817 during the same period in the previous year. Notably, rape cases saw the most dramatic decline, falling by 50.6% from 1,261 cases in early 2024 to 623 this year. Other focus crimes include theft, robbery, murder, homicide, physical injury, and vehicle theft. Year-on-year statistics also show a 7.31% reduction in focus crimes, with 41,717 incidents in 2023 compared to 38,667 in 2024. Marbil credited this progress to the PNP’s strategic initiatives, public cooperation, and technological advancements, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s goal for a safer Philippines. He emphasized the importance of increased police presence in high-crime areas, enhanced intelligence operations, and the use of digital tools for better crime detection and response. Marbil also stressed the role of community engagement in crime prevention and the dual impact of social media in raising awareness and aiding in crime resolution. He encouraged the public to stay alert, report any suspicious behavior, and support law enforcement efforts to sustain peace and order.
