In a bold move against China’s encroachment in the West Philippine Sea, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has been hailed for his strategic approach of forming alliances with global powers. This strategy, according to former Senator Panfilo Lacson, has proven effective in countering threats from China. Lacson, a senatorial candidate backed by the administration, expressed his full endorsement of Marcos’ unwavering stance on Philippine sovereignty during a press conference in Dumaguete City.
Lacson emphasized that Marcos’ policy is crystal clear: not a single inch of Philippine territory will be surrendered. He praised the president’s tactic of aligning with nations that, while not individually as powerful as China, can collectively match or even surpass China’s strength. This ‘balance of power’ strategy, Lacson argued, serves as a significant deterrent, compelling China to reconsider any aggressive actions.
Highlighting the importance of international support, Lacson pointed to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States as a critical component of the Philippines’ defense strategy. He explained that an attack on a vessel from either nation is considered an attack on both, significantly raising the stakes for any potential aggressor.
The West Philippine Sea, part of the broader South China Sea, remains a contentious area due to Beijing’s sweeping claims over the region. Despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling in favor of the Philippines, which invalidated China’s claims, tensions persist as Beijing continues to disregard the decision.
