Pope Francis Resting Comfortably After Respiratory Crisis, Vatican Confirms

·

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis has been resting comfortably overnight following a serious respiratory condition. The 88-year-old pontiff, currently at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, experienced acute respiratory failure due to pneumonia in both lungs.

Initially admitted with bronchitis on February 14, his condition progressed to pneumonia, drawing global concern. Despite two alarming respiratory episodes caused by endobronchial mucus accumulation and resulting bronchospasm, Pope Francis is now in a stable condition.

Acute respiratory failure, a potentially life-threatening condition where the lungs fail to oxygenate the blood adequately, or handle carbon dioxide levels, prompted the medical team to maintain a “reserved” prognosis, indicating uncertainty about his recovery.

Currently residing in a Vatican-designated suite on the hospital’s 10th floor, Pope Francis continues his pope duties. While he missed his customary Angelus prayer, he sent a written message expressing gratitude to well-wishers.

In his note, Francis expressed his deep appreciation for the prayers, stating: “I am deeply touched by your love and support and feel uplifted by your prayers. Thank you all for your compassion.”
