Reported by Giselle Ombay from GMA Integrated News, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro stated on Sunday that there have been no engagements with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. about the anticipated impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Castro explained that the President’s stance remains unchanged.
“We haven’t discussed it. I’ve met with the President several times, but he hasn’t mentioned the impeachment,” Castro shared in a Super Radyo dzBB interview, indicating that Marcos consistently holds his position unchanged regarding the matter.
President Marcos previously expressed that he wouldn’t endorse any impeachment against Duterte, arguing that it wouldn’t benefit the Filipino populace at this time. Last month, he also refuted claims of involvement in Duterte’s impeachment process but conveyed potential openness to a special session upon the Senate’s request.
The House of Representatives filed the impeachment complaint against Duterte on February 5, gaining the support of more than 200 lawmakers. Meanwhile, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero has provided a tentative schedule for the impeachment trial to begin on July 30.
Vice President Duterte has reacted by challenging the constitutionality of the impeachment complaint in the Supreme Court.
Additionally, Castro noted another directive from President Marcos, emphasizing that public officials are obligated to serve without expecting public gratitude in return. “He believes the government should not expect thanks for projects carried out for the people,” Castro explained, highlighting the President’s focus on duty over recognition.
