The forthcoming closure of the EDSA bus lane to facilitate the rehabilitation of Metro Manila’s primary thoroughfare has been announced by the Department of Public Works and Highways. Repairs are set to commence from the northbound lane of Balintawak to Monumento, and the southbound lane from Monumento to Roxas Boulevard. Partnerships with the Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority have been solidified to kick off the P300 million project for the northbound section and the extensive P7 billion endeavor for the 15 southbound portions. Recent data shows that the EDSA busway accommodated over 63 million passengers in 2024, with a significant average of 177,000 daily commuters in January 2025 alone. Activities involved in the rehabilitation program entail reinforcing the concrete pavement and implementing asphalt overlaying integrated with anti-rutting enhancements. With completion targeted within a year, in time for the 2026 ASEAN Summit, the DPWH and partnering agencies are gearing up for potential traffic complications during the construction period. Collaboration between government bodies and stakeholders is crucial in mitigating the traffic impact. The ongoing repair, necessitating the closure of the bus lane, will prompt temporary rerouting of buses to alternative lanes on EDSA. Moreover, discussions are ongoing regarding the implementation of shared bus lanes while rehabilitation efforts progress. The rehabilitation project, initially projected to begin this March, emphasizes the importance of infrastructural improvements for the efficient operation of the EDSA thoroughfare.
