In a significant move to enhance the Philippine agricultural sector, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), in collaboration with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Department of Agriculture (DA), has initiated a project aimed at leveraging the geographical indication (GI) system. This initiative, launched in Manila, seeks to increase the competitiveness of local agriculture and uplift farmers’ earnings.
The project’s objectives include pinpointing ten high-potential GIs, securing GI registration for at least two products, and offering guidance to farmers and other stakeholders on the registration process. Additionally, the initiative encompasses training workshops designed to bolster the capabilities of IPOPHL, DA, and local government units in managing, protecting, and verifying GIs.
A strategic meeting took place on February 5, where the parties discussed potential areas of cooperation and outlined the next steps for utilizing the AFD’s funding of 500,000 euros (PHP30.1 million) over 21 months.
IPOPHL Director General Brigitte da Costa-Villaluz emphasized the project’s potential to benefit the entire GI ecosystem in the Philippines, stating, “Through this collaboration, we are committed to achieving several key milestones that will not only protect but also promote our agriculture.”
DA Assistant Secretary Joycel Panlilio highlighted the project’s role in fostering cooperation between the DA, IPOPHL, and AFD, and expressed confidence that it would enhance productivity and market opportunities for farmers.
AFD Deputy Country Director Thierry Labaste acknowledged the long-term nature of the project but expressed optimism about the strong collaboration among the key stakeholders involved.
