Antique Province Charts Course for Renewable Energy Future

·

In a significant move towards sustainability, the province of Antique is setting its sights on a future powered by renewable energy. This initiative was highlighted during an energy forum held at the New Capitol Building on November 6, 2024, where Officer in Charge Governor Dante Beriong announced the province’s commitment to transitioning from traditional energy sources like coal and bunker fuel to cleaner alternatives.

Following the forum, the Antique Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) is tasked with developing the Antique Renewable Energy Plan (AREP). This plan will be presented to the Provincial Development Council next month, outlining the steps needed to shift to renewable energy. Governor Beriong emphasized that the AREP will also identify potential investments and funding sources for these projects.

Acting PPDO chief Bienvinido Nallos Jr. highlighted the province’s existing micro and mini-hydropower plants, which could be expanded to boost energy generation. Additionally, Nallos mentioned exploring other renewable sources such as wind and solar energy.

Melvin Purzuelo, from the Green Forum Panay Guimaras, Inc., pointed out specific areas in Sebaste, Culasi, Valderrama, and San Remigio where existing hydropower facilities could be enhanced. These improvements could meet the province’s energy needs while also providing water for irrigation and community use.

The local government units (LGUs) manage these hydropower plants, ensuring community involvement and benefits. During the forum, Elaine Grace Fernandez from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) discussed the Western Visayas Regional Development Plan 2023-2028, which aligns with national goals to increase renewable energy’s share in the power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and over 50% by 2040. Fernandez stressed the importance of empowering LGUs in the transition to clean energy.
