Negros Oriental Intensifies Efforts to Keep Avian Flu at Bay

·

In a proactive move to safeguard the region from avian influenza, Negros Oriental has escalated its preventive measures. On November 12, 2024, agricultural technicians from the Department of Agriculture’s regulatory division in Central Visayas initiated a weeklong blood sampling campaign in Sta. Catalina. This area, known for its substantial poultry population and frequent visits by migratory birds, is considered a high-risk zone for the spread of the virus.

Jaymar Vilos, spokesperson for the Provincial Veterinary Office, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the standard blood sampling requirements have been doubled to enhance monitoring efforts. The regional team is assisting to ensure the process is completed within the week.

In addition to Sta. Catalina, other high-risk areas targeted for sampling include Canlaon City, Manjuyod, Ayungon, Tanjay City, Bais City, Bayawan City, Siaton, and Zamboanguita. These locations are also frequented by migratory birds, increasing the risk of avian influenza transmission.

Despite these intensified efforts, Vilos confirmed that no cases of the highly contagious avian influenza have been detected in Negros Oriental to date, maintaining the province’s status as free from the virus.
