In a significant conservation effort, the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Belison, Antique, has taken custody of a juvenile Philippine hawk-eagle. The young bird was captured by residents of Barangay Delima after it was spotted attacking a chick in a local poultry area. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, and the eagle was handed over to CENRO the following day by Barangay Delima Chairperson Merriam Lagunday.
CENRO Information Officer Donna Amaran explained that the eagle was seen perched on a mango tree before it swooped down on the chick. The residents managed to capture the bird using a net. Amaran noted that the eagle’s claws suggest it is still a juvenile, as they are not as large as those of mature eagles. A physical examination conducted by Dr. Marco Rafael Ardamil from the Provincial Veterinarian Office confirmed that the eagle is healthy and uninjured.
Currently, CENRO is working on transferring the eagle to the Mari-it Wildlife and Conservation Park in Lambunao, Iloilo, which specializes in the care of vulnerable and critically endangered species. Amaran also mentioned that the area around Barangay Delima might be home to more eagles, thanks to the lush forest vegetation that serves as their habitat.
Amaran urged the public to refrain from harming eagles or other birds, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts to protect and conserve endangered species in the region.
