Calamba City Establishes Local Media Board to Champion Gender Equality

·

In a significant move towards fostering gender equality, the city government of Calamba, Laguna, has set up a Local Media Board (LMB) dedicated to Gender and Development (GAD). The initiative, which took shape during a meeting at Monte Vista Hotel and Resort on November 20, 2024, aims to tackle gender biases and stereotypes through a collaborative approach involving various sectors of the community.

The LMB’s formation was marked by the presence of local and national media professionals, university professors specializing in communication, city information officers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. Jasmin Siman, the supervising administrative officer of Calamba City’s GAD Office, led the discussions at the event.

Mayor Roseller Rizal will chair the LMB, with City Councilors Lian Aldabe-Cortez and Alvin Manguiat as vice chairpersons. The Information, Investment Promotions, and Employment Services Office (IIPESO) will manage program linkages, training, and development initiatives. Meanwhile, the academic sector will concentrate on research, policy formulation, and evaluation, and media practitioners will spearhead information dissemination and monitoring efforts.

An initial budget of PHP1 million has been earmarked for the LMB within the city’s 2025 Annual Investment Plan (AIP), part of a larger PHP250-million allocation for GAD. Jasmin Siman emphasized the importance of their role, stating, “Beyond our mandates from international commitments, laws, and policies, we are custodians of the people’s trust and resources. With our power, knowledge, skills, and resources, we can ensure that development works for everyone in the city.”

This initiative underscores Calamba City’s dedication to promoting gender equality and inclusivity, providing a collaborative platform to achieve broader development goals.
