In a show of solidarity, the mayors of 49 localities in Cebu have thrown their support behind the ‘Pasigarbo sa Sugbo’ festival, a cultural celebration organized by the provincial government. The event, held annually on August 6, has become a significant platform for showcasing the rich historical and cultural tapestry of the region, drawing attention to the unique heritage of each participating town and city.
The mayors’ endorsement came in the form of a manifesto signed on November 21, 2024, which praised the festival for fostering unity and pride among the municipalities. They highlighted how the festival not only celebrates Cebu’s diverse identity but also brings economic benefits to local communities through tourism and job opportunities for artists, performers, and other workers involved in the festivities.
The manifesto was a direct response to a social media post that criticized the allocation of PHP200 million for this year’s festival, labeling it as a misuse of public funds. The mayors refuted these claims, explaining that the funds were used as subsidies to help local government units meet the logistical demands of the cultural performances.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, who spearheads the festival, has been instrumental in promoting Cebu’s cultural heritage through ‘Pasigarbo sa Sugbo’. The event, recognized as a special non-working public holiday under Republic Act 7698, continues to be a cornerstone of Cebu’s cultural calendar, reinforcing the province’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its traditions.
