In a significant development for the arts and tourism sectors, Dagupan City in Pangasinan broke ground on the Bernal-Edades Cultural Center and Museum on November 15, 2024. The ceremony was attended by key figures including Pangasinan Fourth District Representative Christopher de Venecia and Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez. This new cultural institution, dedicated to the works of national artists Victorio Edades and Salvador Bernal, is poised to become a beacon of creativity and a major tourist attraction in the region.
The museum, with an initial investment of PHP50 million from Senator Pia Cayetano’s office, is part of a larger PHP150 million project. Edades, known as the ‘Father of Modern Philippine Painting,’ was honored as a national artist in 1976, while Bernal, celebrated as the ‘Father of Theater Design,’ received his national artist title in 2003. Their works, including Edades’ iconic 1928 painting ‘Sketch’ and Bernal’s innovative 1995 design ‘Sa Bunganga ng Pating,’ will be showcased in the museum.
The establishment of this cultural center was mandated by Republic Act No. 11726, authored by Representative de Venecia. Dagupan City’s officer-in-charge, Sharon Maramba, highlighted the museum’s potential to attract tourists and showcase local culture and talent. The city, already a popular destination during the annual Bangus Festival and for its culinary delights like ‘bangus’ and ‘pigar-pigar,’ is expected to see an increase in visitors.
Representative de Venecia emphasized the museum’s role in inspiring both young and old creatives in Pangasinan, providing them with a safe space to explore and excel in the arts. He expressed optimism about the future, stating that the cultural center and museum would significantly enhance the cultural and community life of Dagupan City.
