In Negros Oriental, the incidence of violence against women has seen a decline over the first ten months of 2024, thanks to concerted efforts from both government and private sectors, alongside increased public awareness. The Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD) of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) reported a total of 369 cases of violence against women (VAW) from January to October, a decrease from the 386 cases recorded in the same timeframe the previous year. Captain Helen Grace Aldirete, the provincial chief of WCPD, highlighted that this year, 24 suspects were apprehended and charged, 366 cases were resolved, and three remain under investigation. Among the cities in the province, Dumaguete reported the highest number of cases at 27, followed by Guihulngan with 12, Tanjay and Canlaon City each with 8, Bais City with 7, and Bayawan City with 6. In the municipalities, Bacong topped the list with 62 cases, while Vallehermoso had the least with just one case. NOPPO’s strategies to combat gender violence include leveraging social media to spread awareness about Republic Act 9262, the VAWC law, and other relevant legislation. Each police station’s WCPD desk maintains its own social media presence. Additionally, the police engage in dialogues and consultations, and distribute informational materials in schools, markets, and other public gathering spots. They also utilize radio programs to further their outreach efforts.
