In a move to enhance educational tourism, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) are collaborating on a science tourism initiative in Leyte province. This project aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of science, technology, and innovation among tourists.
A two-day site assessment was conducted from November 29 to 30, involving officials from DOST and DOT, the Eastern Visayas Association of Tour Guides, and representatives from local travel and tour agencies. The assessment focused on identifying potential science tourism sites across Leyte.
The DOT highlighted the potential of Eastern Visayas to become a hub for educational tourism. Key sites included in the tour are the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation in Isabel, the Energy Development Corporation’s geothermal steamfields in Kananga and Ormoc, the Coffee Processing Center in Ormoc, and the Alto Peak Cafe Chocolate Processing facility, also in Ormoc.
Additional destinations in Baybay City include the Specialty Pulp Manufacturing Industry Corporation, Ching Bee Trading, Jackfruit and Camote Processing Facility, and Masagana Complimentary Goods. These sites offer visitors a chance to learn about product manufacturing processes, sustainable farming, and more.
The DOT emphasized that Eastern Visayas could become a destination where science and adventure intersect. The DOST regional office noted that these sites provide educational experiences, offering insights into various scientific processes and facilities.
Both DOST and DOT are working on developing tour programs that highlight Leyte’s scientific and natural heritage. The initiative is seen as a way to attract tourists interested in science and travel, promoting scientific awareness and appreciation through innovative tourism products.
