La Union’s New Weavers’ Group Aims to Preserve and Innovate Inabel Tradition

·

In Bangar, La Union, a new organization called the Young Loomweavers Association of Bangar (YLAB) has been established to protect and promote the traditional craft of Inabel weaving. This initiative follows a three-day training session at the Abel Academy: School of Living Traditions Nogueras Weaving, where participants learned the art of handloom weaving directly from seasoned cultural bearers. The training covered essential techniques, including basic weaving and the operation of the traditional loom, known as tillar.

The training not only imparted practical skills but also deepened the participants’ understanding of the cultural and historical importance of Inabel weaving. Phil Marie Lucina, the newly elected president of YLAB, emphasized the importance of preserving this beautiful tradition for future generations. She expressed enthusiasm about continuing and expanding the craft, suggesting innovations like hats, headbands, and dresses, moving beyond traditional products like blankets and pillowcases.

Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David has voiced strong support for the initiative, highlighting the crucial role of young people in keeping the tradition alive. She expressed excitement about nurturing a new generation of weavers who will carry forward the cultural heritage of Bangar.
