In a significant effort to combat child exploitation, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Central Visayas has successfully executed 20 rescue operations throughout 2024. These operations focused on rescuing minors from various forms of abuse, including online sexual exploitation and prostitution. Shalaine Marie Lucero, the Director of DSWD-7, highlighted that the rescued children were victims of severe crimes such as the distribution of materials related to child sexual abuse, human trafficking linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators, and other forms of sexual abuse. The success of these operations is attributed to the enhanced collaboration between DSWD, local government units, law enforcement, and educational institutions. DSWD-7’s social workers have been instrumental in these efforts, working tirelessly with law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of the children. Lucero emphasized the readiness of DSWD’s social workers, stating they are available 24/7 and prepared to respond across the region as needed. Additionally, DSWD centers and residential care facilities are fully equipped to offer temporary shelter and meet all necessary care standards for the rescued children.
