Benguet province, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, has introduced a pioneering Science and Technology Innovation (STI) Plan aimed at enhancing its vegetable industry. Launched on December 10, 2024, in Baguio City, this initiative marks Benguet as the first in its region to adopt such a comprehensive approach to agricultural improvement through science and technology.
The STI Plan addresses critical issues such as soil acidity, which has been hampering vegetable production. Provincial board member Joel Tingbaoen highlighted the plan’s adaptability, noting that it can be revised to meet the evolving needs of the province. He emphasized Benguet’s role as a model for other regions, with the plan serving as a blueprint for sustainable community development.
Dr. Shiela Marie Singa-Claver, the provincial director of DOST in Benguet, outlined the vision of transforming Benguet into a hub of sustainable communities. She pointed out that the province’s economy relies heavily on farming and mining, with precision and smart agriculture technologies identified as key solutions to production challenges.
DOST has initiated projects to enhance farmers’ capabilities, providing them with training and technological resources to improve their agricultural practices. Dr. Nancy Bantog, DOST-Cordillera Administrative Region director, stressed the importance of green technologies and a circular economy in protecting the environment and ensuring agricultural sustainability. She also noted that the STI Plan aligns with the current administration’s focus on using science and technology to improve quality of life.
This strategic move by Benguet not only aims to solve immediate agricultural issues but also sets a precedent for sustainable development through science and technology across the region.
