Bacolod City Jail Aids Families of Inmates with Food Carts for Livelihood

·

In a heartfelt initiative, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Western Visayas has extended a lifeline to the families of two inmates at the Metro Bacolod District Jail – Male Dormitory. On December 11, 2024, a ceremony at the jail in Barangay Handumanan saw the distribution of food carts to Analyn Salon and Genoveva Corter under the ‘Kariton ng Paghilom’ project, which translates to ‘Cart of Healing’ in Hiligaynon.

Analyn Salon, aged 32, expressed profound gratitude for the support, which she said would significantly aid her and her three children. Salon, a resident of Barangay 16, has been the sole provider for her family since her husband’s incarceration over a year ago. She juggles jobs as a nail technician and laundry worker while managing the medical needs of her youngest child, who suffers from congenital heart failure and requires daily medication and urgent surgery.

Genoveva Corter, 64, from Barangay 10, also received a food cart. She supports a large family of 19, including her spouse who is currently imprisoned. Her eldest child is battling end-stage renal disease and requires dialysis twice a week, while two others have mental disabilities.

The ‘Kariton ng Paghilom’ project, supported by various sponsors, symbolizes more than just a means of livelihood; it represents hope and healing within the community. According to BJMP-6, it embodies their commitment to support the most vulnerable members of society.

The event was led by Chief Supt. Simeon Dolojo Jr., director of BJMP-6, and Supt. Norberto Miciano Jr., the district jail warden, highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to assist those in need.
