Samar Province Launches Medical Scholarship for 22 Aspiring Doctors

·

In a significant move to bolster healthcare in Samar, the provincial government has announced the first batch of 22 medical scholarship recipients. These future physicians, selected from Samar province, will embark on their medical education at Samar State University in Catbalogan City, marking a historic moment for the region.

The scholarship, fully funded by the provincial government, offers comprehensive support to the students. Benefits include free tuition, allowances for books, supplies, equipment, and uniforms, as well as accommodations and internship fees. Additionally, scholars will receive financial assistance during their mandatory internship, medical board review fees, licensure fees, annual medical insurance, and other living allowances.

The initiative also extends support to the faculty, aiming to enhance their capacity to educate the next generation of doctors. Upon completing their medical degree and passing the Physician Licensure Examination, scholars are required to serve in rural health units, district hospitals, and the provincial hospital. This return service is part of a strategic effort to strengthen the provincial healthcare system in line with the Universal Healthcare Law.

The students will begin their studies at the Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SSU-SIIM) at the next school opening. SSU-SIIM is the 20th institution in the Philippines to receive approval for a medical degree program, aligning with the objectives of the “Doktor para sa Bayan” Act. This law seeks to increase the number of local medical graduates committed to serving in rural areas through the Medical Scholarship and Return Service program.

The scholarship program is secured by Provincial Ordinance No. 17-453-24, which guarantees annual budget support, ensuring the sustainability of this vital initiative.
