Tingog Party-List Advocates for Economic Boost Through AKAP Cash Aid

·

In Tacloban City, the Tingog Party-list’s Deputy Majority Leader, Rep. Jude Acidre, emphasized the potential economic benefits of the Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP). The program, which involves distributing cash to ‘near poor’ families, is seen as a vital tool to stimulate the Philippine economy amidst soaring inflation rates. Acidre highlighted that by providing financial assistance to low-income families, the program encourages spending, which is crucial for economic growth. He warned that without such initiatives, consumer spending could decline, leading to business closures and job losses. Acidre also pointed out that similar strategies are being adopted in Thailand, where the government plans to distribute 10,000 baht to citizens over 16 to invigorate their economy. He acknowledged criticisms of AKAP but stressed the need to weigh these against the program’s benefits. This statement follows the recent approval of the 2025 national budget, which reinstated PHP26 billion for AKAP. The program, managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), has already assisted over four million Filipinos in its first year. Eligibility for AKAP is restricted to those earning below the statutory minimum wage and not already receiving regular DSWD assistance. Tingog Party-list is represented by Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez, spouse of House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
