In response to a surge in injuries linked to the use of homemade cannons known as ‘boga,’ the Iloilo City government is contemplating new regulations or a potential ban on these devices. Mayor Jerry Treñas announced on January 2, 2025, that he would urge the City Council to either revise current laws or introduce new legislation to control or outlaw the use, sale, and manufacture of boga. This move comes after the Iloilo City Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit reported seven fireworks-related injuries from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025, with four of these incidents directly linked to boga. Additionally, Treñas emphasized the need for public awareness and protection of children, as the use of boga extends beyond the holiday season. In the broader Iloilo province, the Provincial Health Office noted 31 firework-related injuries during the same timeframe, with 17 attributed to boga. Last week, Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky of the Police Regional Office 6 suggested to the Regional Peace and Order Council that local governments should consider ordinances to prohibit boga during New Year festivities.
