Iloilo City Advances Coastal Management with New Strategic Plan

·

Iloilo City is on the brink of implementing a new strategic initiative, the Iloilo City Coastal Resources Management Plan (ICRMP) for the years 2024-2028, aimed at the sustainable management and protection of its coastal and marine resources. Janis Sy, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources, emphasized that the plan serves as a vital roadmap for the future development of the city’s coastal areas. This was highlighted during her presentation at the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s regular session on January 9, 2025.

The ICRMP is designed to assess the current state of nearshore habitats, resources, and the socio-economic conditions of local communities. It aims to monitor and address issues and challenges facing the coastal regions of Iloilo City. The plan also includes a comprehensive review of the ecosystem, coastal resources, and the social, economic, legal, and institutional frameworks that will guide future management and evaluation efforts.

A key component of the plan is the development of a resilient coastal environment strategy, which includes identifying specific programs, projects, and activities tailored for different areas. Additionally, the plan proposes the creation of the Iloilo City Coastal Barangay Community Council, which will involve officials from the 26 coastal villages in efforts to restore and protect vulnerable coastal resources.

The detailed 219-page document will serve as the foundation for implementing these initiatives. Ronald Cartagena, the City Planning and Development Officer, described the plan as a comprehensive approach by the city government to manage its coastal areas effectively.

Following its presentation, the plan is set to undergo further deliberation by the Sangguniang Panlungsod before its final adoption. Councilor Urminico Baronda Jr. acknowledged the significance of the ICRMP but expressed a desire to delve deeper into the proposed framework, particularly regarding the role of barangay officials in its execution.
