CEBU CITY – The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was filled with excitement as it welcomed over 1,000 Balik Cebu travelers arriving to celebrate the Sinulog festival on Thursday. The festive atmosphere was palpable as airport officials greeted the passengers with enthusiasm.

According to Mary Ann Dimayabao, the information officer at MCIA, a total of five flights brought in 1,027 passengers. Three of these flights originated from Taipei, with JX782 carrying 180 passengers, BR282 with 302, and CI706 with 175. Additionally, three flights from Seoul transported Balik Cebu participants, with CI706 carrying 175, PR485 with 192, and TW175 with 178 passengers.

MCIA noted in a statement that several airlines have ramped up their flight schedules this January, facilitating easier access for those wishing to partake in the festivities. However, the celebratory mood was momentarily interrupted when an unattended bag was discovered in the Arrival Area of Terminal 1.

The Airport Police and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Unit quickly addressed the situation, resolving it within 10 minutes. The bag, which had been left behind, contained only clothing. Dimayabao reassured travelers that the response adhered to international airport safety standards, underscoring that safety and security are paramount at MCIA.

She emphasized the airport’s dedication to the safety and well-being of all passengers and staff, stating, “The swift and comprehensive action reflects our commitment to ensuring the welfare of everyone at the airport.”
