In a significant gathering at Citadines Bacolod, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson called upon leaders, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to collaborate closely in propelling the newly formed Negros Island Region (NIR) towards becoming a beacon of progress and inclusivity. The forum, held on January 21, 2025, was a platform to discuss the economic future of the region, which includes Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, and the bustling Bacolod City.
Governor Lacson emphasized the importance of decisive and cooperative action to transform NIR into a model region. He highlighted the potential of the new administrative setup, established by Republic Act 12000 signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to enhance service delivery, spur economic growth, and foster social development. The region, with a population of approximately 4.3 million, is poised to leverage its unified geography to boost energy, remove barriers, and optimize shared resources like water, energy, and land.
The forum also shed light on various initiatives, including a bamboo propagation program in Negros Occidental aimed at environmental sustainability and water security. Discussions extended to the development of the bamboo industry, agribusiness, real estate, and the critical need for a reliable power source. The event was organized by the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, showcasing the region’s commitment to economic advancement.
Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Benitez, during a press briefing, advocated for the full presence of national government agencies across all provinces within NIR. He stressed the importance of modern technology in facilitating government transactions, ensuring that services are accessible to all residents.
President Marcos, in his remarks upon signing the NIR Act, described the new region as a stronghold for enhanced growth and a channel for more effective service delivery. He assured that the national government would support NIR to quickly reach its full potential.
