The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has earmarked PHP247.7 million to fund a 120-day supplementary feeding program aimed at supporting 82,584 children across the Ilocos Region this year. The initiative, which focuses on enhancing the nutritional status of children, particularly those who are undernourished, will see the largest allocation of PHP137.5 million going to Pangasinan to benefit 45,831 children. La Union will receive PHP42.2 million for 14,078 beneficiaries, Ilocos Sur is allocated PHP39.3 million for 13,110 children, and Ilocos Norte will get PHP28.7 million for 9,565 beneficiaries.
Clarivel Banzuela, the Statutory Programs Division Chief of DSWD Ilocos, explained that the program not only aims to improve children’s weight but also complements the nutrition efforts of other agencies. Although the number of beneficiaries this year is less than last year’s 101,374, the meal allowance per child has been increased from PHP15 to PHP25 to combat inflation and ensure adequate nutrition.
During the program, children will receive nutritious lunches and substantial snacks, prepared according to a cycle menu provided by DSWD. Banzuela noted that the menu can be adjusted based on locally available ingredients, such as vegetables. The program has yet to start in some areas, as they are still completing their previous 120-day cycle.
The DSWD plans to work with the National Nutrition Council to assess the program’s impact on children’s nutrition, ensuring that the initiative effectively meets its goals.
