In a solemn ceremony at Camp Simeon Ola in Legazpi City, Albay, the Bicol police force gathered on January 25, 2025, to honor the memory and bravery of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) members who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 2015 Mamasapano operation in Maguindanao. The event commenced with a Holy Mass at the Sto. Niño Chapel, symbolizing the region’s respect for their ultimate sacrifice.
The ceremony saw the flag at the PRO-5 Parade Ground lowered to half-staff, attended by personnel from the regional headquarters. Representing PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, Deputy Regional Director for Operations Col. Roque Bausa spoke at the event, emphasizing the profound impact of the SAF 44’s courage on society. He highlighted that their sacrifice was instrumental in maintaining public safety and urged the community to remember all uniformed personnel who have served and died for the nation.
Col. Bausa reflected on the broader implications of their service, stating, “As we honor the SAF 44, let us also remember our fellow service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in their duty to protect peace and order.” He underscored that their dedication and bravery are the bedrock of public trust in the police force.
The operation, known as “Oplan Exodus,” was successful in eliminating Zulkifli Bin Hir, alias Marwan, a notorious Malaysian bomb maker and leader of the terrorist organization Jemaah Islamiyah.
