Comelec Plans Informational Forum for Negros Oriental Candidates Ahead of 2025 Elections

·

In preparation for the upcoming 2025 elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Island is set to host an informational forum for candidates in Negros Oriental. Scheduled for February 7, the forum aims to educate candidates on campaign prohibitions and election laws, addressing a common lack of familiarity among candidates and their legal teams. Lionel Marco Castillano, the Executive Director of Comelec-Negros Island Region, highlighted the necessity of such forums, noting that even lawyers often need refreshers on election laws like the Fair Elections Act, which they might only review during election periods. The event will take place at the Maringal Hall of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office, inviting candidates for provincial and congressional positions. Castillano also plans to extend similar educational efforts through local election officers, organizing town hall meetings. In collaboration with the Philippine National Police and the Diocesan Electoral Board (DEB), additional activities such as a peace covenant, unity walk, and youth concert are planned. Msgr. Julius Perpetuo S. Heruela of the DEB stressed the importance of educating young voters through initiatives like the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and the National Movement for Free Elections. The campaign period for national candidates will commence on February 11, followed by local candidates on March 28. Castillano mentioned that they are waiting for directives from Comelec before initiating ‘Operation Baklas,’ aimed at removing unauthorized campaign materials.
