In a move to ensure safety and compliance during the election period, the Bicol region’s Police Regional Office (PRO-5) is calling on all gun owners, especially those with expired licenses, to hand over their firearms for safekeeping. This initiative, led by PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, aims to support the enforcement of the election gun ban and promote a peaceful voting environment on May 12.
Dizon emphasized that surrendering firearms to local police stations not only aligns with the gun ban but also reflects a commitment to peaceful elections. He assured gun owners that they could reclaim their weapons once their licenses are renewed. Between January 12 and 26, PRO-5 recorded the voluntary surrender of 62 firearms, including .38 revolvers, .45 caliber pistols, 9mm pistols, and shotguns.
Despite the cooperative efforts, four individuals were arrested for breaching the gun ban. Dizon stressed that each surrendered firearm contributes to a safer and more peaceful election, underscoring that adherence to the ban is a collective duty.
The gun ban, enforced under Commission on Elections Resolution No. 11067, will remain in effect until June 11. It prohibits the carrying and transporting of firearms and deadly weapons without authorization. To enforce this, PRO-5 has set up checkpoints throughout the region, with Dizon warning that violators will face legal consequences as part of the ongoing effort to maintain peace and order during the election period.
