Philippine Coast Guard Halts Sea Travel in Northern Samar Amid Northeast Monsoon

·

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has issued a suspension of sea travel across several areas of Northern Samar, prompted by the anticipated impact of the northeast monsoon. The directive, announced on Thursday, January 30, 2025, affects all sea vessels operating along the northeastern sections of the northern and eastern coasts of the province.

The affected towns include Biri, Rosario, San Jose, Bobon, Catarman, Mondragon, San Roque, Pambujan, Laoang, Palapag, Mapanas, Gamay, Lavezares, and Lapinig, all located within the Samar provinces. The suspension primarily impacts travel to the island communities situated in the northeastern region of Northern Samar.

The PCG’s notice specifies that all vessels and watercraft with a gross tonnage of 250 and below operating within the northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar are subject to the temporary suspension. Additionally, vessels and watercraft with a gross tonnage of 35 and below are also barred from venturing out to sea within the province. Larger vessels, while not suspended, are cautioned about the risk of encountering large waves.

The PCG advises operators of smaller vessels to stay in port or seek safe harbor, emphasizing the need for experienced crews and properly equipped vessels to navigate these challenging conditions.
